A 19-year-old motorcycle rider was killed Monday night after a crash on Interstate 94 at Merriman Road in Romulus, state police said.

The crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. on the freeway's westbound lanes, according to authorities.

According to a preliminary investigation, two motorcycles were speeding on the freeway when one of their operators began to lose control of his machine and struck a concrete wall.

Officials said the 19-year-old operator was thrown off the motorcycle and struck a light pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We want to remind motorcycle operators to drive responsibly," Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw, a spokesman for the agency's Second District, said on X. "It is important to know your riding abilities, wear a helmet and drive the speed limit when operating a motorcycle. It will help prevent crashes like this one."
