Michigan, looking to build depth at receiver, has added C.J. Charleston out of Youngstown State.

Charleston posted his commitment on social media Wednesday. The 6-foot, 190-pound receiver from Gates Mill, Ohio, had 33 catches for 467 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Penguins.

He missed the 2022 season after suffering an Achilles injury early in preseason camp. Charleston was coming off a sophomore season in which he caught 16 passes for 147 yards. He redshirted his freshman season, in 2019.

The Wolverines are moving on without their top two receivers, Roman Wilson, a third-round pick in last week’s NFL Draft, and Cornelius Johnson, a seventh-round selection. Offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Kirk Campbell said after the spring game on April 20 that Michigan likely would look in the transfer portal for receivers.

“We’ve got some explosive guys,” Campbell said at the time. “Obviously, it’s a top-loaded room. We need to get some guys to help out there. We probably will look to add some guys in that position, how many I’m not sure. We just don’t even have numbers. When you look at the roster depth, you need enough guys. Hamstring injuries are going to happen, quad injuries, so we have to make sure we have enough to fill the roster.”
