HOMESTYLEHomestyle: International designer Greg NataleThe Detroit NewsSnakeskin inspired this collection of warm throws from Natale. A jacquard is woven from cotton and chenille -- this one is in saffron and teamed with geometric pillows.Greg NataleThis is the room that launched Natale with spreads in Belle (an Australian magazine) and Wallpaper magazine. He designed it for his oldest sister, and it celebrates his love for a fellow Australian designer, Florence Broadhurst. He tweaked the pattern and had it custom-colored, repeated it in the bedding, window shade (which seamlessly blends into the wall) and the framed art.Greg NataleProducts from Natale's accessories line include throws (textured black and white) and pillows (printed in geometric, striped, marbled patterns).Greg NataleNatale's New Malachite design for Bisazza is made up of tiny glass mosaics, but the vivid radiating swirls are big on a feature wall.BisazzaMany of the pieces in this range of Rosso marble accessories was inspired by the modernist architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. The stones were chosen for their color and graining, but as it's a natural product, patterns may vary slightly.Greg NataleHand-cast and hand-polished brass bowls add a layer of elegance, says Natale. From left to right: Boule, Trident (on wide legs) and Ziggurat, from his collection. They are lacquered to preserve their luster.Greg NataleThe diagonal pattern created by Natale's graphic Moscow honed marble tiles in Norwegian rose, Carrara Gioia and emerald green creates a dynamic ground for classic paneled walls, painted in a soft blush.Anson SmartBlack granite treads paired with patterned concrete tiles -- Natale's design manufactured by Teranova -- on the risers in this Spanish Revival-style decor. The client wanted a grand Hollywood-style stair. The designer says the patterns' alluring rhythm draws the eye up, and the repeated lines of the iron balustrade contribute to the drama.Anson SmartWalk into the foyer in Natale's own apartment in Sydney, in a 1998 building by the late Harry Seidler, and there's a lot to take in. Front and center are a pair of giant Andy Warhol flower prints. The designer placed them on a wall covered with bold gold on white marbled paper, which lends a glam organic touch. His taupe and white Yves carpet adds geometric punctuation. He wasn't about to settle for plain closet doors, so he created a dimensional surface, echoed by a '70s sculpture by American artist Dan Murphy on the small table.Anson SmartA hand-painted de Gournay wallcovering is paired with the organic Ink rug from Greg Natale's collection. The rug's warm tones carry over to the curved camel leather Dorothy Draper sofa and brass frame of the vintage coffee table, from Conley and Co., and the frame of the two chairs upholstered in velvet. This use of pattern is one of the designer's favorites, especially the vivid scene of birds that are both delicate and compelling. It's "pattern as its most extravagant," Natale says.Anson SmartThis personality-filled family/kitchen room started with the collection of Fornasetti plates -- the homeowner's. Natale arranged them on a wall painted duck's egg blue. The round shape is repeated in pendant lights above the kitchen island. Seating is monochromatic, while accessories offer pattern and texture. Splashes of saffron add pop in upholstery, a throw, the geometric St. Tropez pillow and Natale's rug, which sits on geometric floor tiles that link living, informal dining and kitchen areas.Anson SmartLow ceiling? Greg Natale's solution: Create a little drama. He first papered the tray ceiling in a swirling malachite pattern in black and white, painted the walls navy and furnished the space with a blue velvet sofa by Kelly Wearstler, paired with white Cassina chairs. The snakeskin rug by Diane von Furstenberg is genius. And the final touch: graphic prints with glint of gold.Anson Smart: There are quite a few patterns in this bedroom, and the blend is smart. On the bed, malachite bedding (from Natale's collection), geometric pillow and Astoria geometric wallcovering alter scale, as does the designer's Rio rug, which shifts to brown, black and white. A mini houndstooth pattern in black and white adds graphic punch on a pair of chairs. Even the mirror creates an intriguing pattern.Anson SmartA patterned bronze statement door is a bold entry to this home, and it opposes 18-inch-wide American oak plank flooring. In the living area beyond, patterned pillows follow a plum/purple palette. The dimensional shape of the lamp and an arrangement of round stones on a ledge complement other patterns.Anson SmartA sculpted circular rug punctuated by shades of lavender follows the form of a curved sofa, accented with pillows in shades of blue. Adding a jolt in color and pattern is a pair of paintings by the indigenous Australian artist Biddee Baadjo.Anson Smart
