Delayed justice: Larry Nassar's downfall

1993: Larry Nassar graduates from Michigan State's College of Osteopathic Medicine. The year before, he assaulted his earliest known victim, a 12- to 14-year-old girl, during a study on manipulation treatments for his medical degree, according to a federal lawsuit against him.

1997: Nassar sexually assaults Larissa Boyce, a 16-year-old gymnast in an MSU youth program, while treating her for back problems. Now 37, Boyce said Nassar put his fingers inside her during weekly appointments.

1997: Larissa Boyce told a coach about Nassar, who insisted that Boyce tell MSU's head gymnastics coach, Kathie Klages, above. "(Klages) just couldn't believe that was happening," said Boyce. "She said I must be misunderstanding what was going on."

1998: Nassar begins molesting the 6-year-old daughter of friends, Kyle Stephens, according to testimony from Stephens, seen here. Her parents didn't believe her.

1999: Christie Achenbach, a track and cross country runner at MSU, tells her coach, Kelli Bert, seen here, that Nassar had rubbed her and inserted his fingers inside her during treatment for a hamstring injury, according to an interview with Achenbach.

2000: Nassar digitally penetrates 15-year-old gymnast Rachael Denhollander during treatment for back pain, according to a federal lawsuit against him.

2000: Tiffany Thomas Lopez, a Spartan softball player, tells two MSU athletic trainers, Lianna Hadden and Destiny Teachnor-Hauk, that Nassar digitally penetrated her during treatment for lower back pain, according to an interview with her.

2004: Brianne Randall-Gay, seen here in a recent photo, was a 16-year-old soccer and tennis player. She reported to Meridian Township police that Nassar touched her bare breast and put his hand between her legs during treatment for back pain. Police chose not pursue charges against Nassar.

2004: Kyle Stephens tells her parents Nassar molested her over seven years. They informed Dr. Gary Stollak, an MSU clinical psychologist, Stephens says.

2014: A decade has passed. MSU alum Amanda Thomashow tells Dr. Jeff Kovan of the MSU Sports Medicine Clinic about sexual misconduct during her recent visit to Nassar's office for treatment of hip pain. She also files a report with MSU police, but the county prosecutor’s office declines to file charges.

Dr. Kovan tells an MSU investigator for sexual misconduct complaints under Title IX laws, who notifies Nassar’s boss, Dr. William Strampel. Strampel tells Nassar to limit skin-to-skin contact and have a chaperone during treatments, MSU emails show.

The Title IX investigation was headed by Kristine Moore, above. Among those interviewed was Destiny Teachnor-Hauk, whom Tiffany Thomas Lopez talked to 14 years earlier. "Ms. Teachnor-Hauk states that she has never had a complaint about Dr. Nassar in 17 years and has no concern about him crossing the line between medically appropriate and inappropriate," the report says.

The Title IX investigators interviewed three MSU medical manipulation specialists: from left, Dr. Brooke Lemmen, Dr. Lisa DeStefano and Dr. Jennifer Gilmore. All said that Nassar's behavior was medically appropriate, according to the report.

2014: MSU President Lou Anna Simon is informed that a Title IX complaint and a police report had been filed against an unnamed physician. "I told people to play it straight up, and I did not receive a copy of the report. That's the truth," she said January 17, 2018, in Lansing.

2016: Former gymnast Rachael Denhollander becomes the first to publicly accuse Nassar of molesting her. She files a police report and makes a Title IX complaint.

2016: Denhollander's revelations lead MSU to fire Nassar, who is later charged with criminal sexual conduct. "A monster was stopped after decades of being allowed to prey on women and little girls," Denhollander said in an interview with The Detroit News, "and he wasn't stopped by a single person who could have, and should have stopped him at least 20 years ago."

2017: Former Olympic gymnasts Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney join the list of women accusing Nassar of sexual abuse. Gold medalist Simone Biles also would come forward in January 2018.

2017: A Lansing courtroom is packed with angry family members, victims and friends as former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar pleads guilty to seven sexual assault charges on November 22.
