Ford recalls 230,000 cars over potential engine fires

A risk of engine fires has Ford Motor Co. issuing a safety recall for 230,000 vehicles in North America.

The automaker on Wednesday said models impacted by the recall include the 2014 Escape, 2014-2015 Fiesta ST, 2013-2014 Ford Fusion and 2013-2015 Ford Transit Connect. All are outfitted with 1.6-liter GTDI engines.

Company officials are identifying a “lack of coolant circulation” as the culprit with those models. Overheating can lead to cracked cylinder heads that leaks oil and create the possibility of an under-hood fire.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the coolant issue. But 29 cases of fires have been reported.

Owners of the impacted vehicles will receive reminders from Ford on how to properly maintain coolant levels.

“Customers can continue to drive their vehicles, but should see their dealer if their vehicle exhibits a coolant leak, overheating or frequently needs coolant added,” the company said in a news release Wednesday. “When service kits are available, dealers will install a coolant level sensor with supporting hardware and software at no charge to the customer.”

In addition, the company is also issuing recall notices in North American over a door latch issue on 2014 Fiestas, 2013-2014 Fusions and 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ’s.

Combined, the two recalls are expected to cost Ford $295 million, according to a regulatory filing.
