GM recalls 10 Chevy Cruzes and Volts over tie rod issue

General Motors Co. said Thursday it is recalling 10 2014-15 Chevrolet Cruzes and 2015 Chevrolet Volts in the U.S. because the inner tie rod’s attachment to the steering gear may not have been tightened enough.

The defect could lead to a loss of steering, which could increase the risk of a crash. GM said car owners will be notified and dealers for free will replace the steering gear assembly. GM says it knows of no crashes or injuries tied to the condition.

GM, in its filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said an error in the supplier’s assembly machine allowed the rod to leave the line with lower torque than specified.

The Detroit automaker said it received a notice from the supplier, Robert Bosch Automotive Steering LLC, in late April and after an investigation, GM opted to recall the cars on June 26.

GM said the Cruzes were built between Nov. 8, 2013, and March 12, 2015, and the Volts were built on April 11, 2014. The recall involves nine Cruzes and one Volt. The company also is recalling one 2013 Cruze in Canada.
