General Motors Co. sold 2.6 million vehicles in 2023, up 14% from its 2022 sales, the automaker said Wednesday.

The increase in GM's sales, which were on par with expectations, comes as the industry overall ends a surprisingly strong year thanks to improved supply levels and increases in incentives. GM's 2023 sales were the best the automaker's had since 2019, when it sold 2.9 million vehicles in the United States. The COVD-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, causing major industry disruptions in the years following. Experts at Kelley Blue Book are projecting that 15.5 million new vehicles were sold last year, up 11.6% from 2022.

At GM, every brand saw its sales increase in 2023. GMC's sales rose 9%, Chevrolet's 13%, Cadillac's 9% and Buick's 61%. GM sold 75,883 electric vehicles in 2023, up 93% from 2022's EV sales, which include sales of its commercial BrightDrop electric delivery vans.

“GM has tremendous momentum. We grew our market share in 2023, maintaining strong pricing and low incentives. We led the industry in trucks and had great success with our affordable SUVs like the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista, some of today’s hottest-selling vehicles," said Marissa West, GM senior vice president and president of North America. "In 2024, we expect industry sales to remain strong and we’re excited about the opportunities ahead as we expand customer choice with new vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.”

In 2024, GM is focused on increasing production of its electric vehicles: the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Blazer EV. It's also launching production of several other battery-powered products including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, Cadillac Celestiq and Cadillac Optiq.

The automaker is also launching new or redesigned internal combustion engine models of the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Equinox, Buick Envision, Chevrolet Traverse, Cadillac CT5, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban in 2024.

Other automakers also reported full-year sales Wednesday. U.S. sales in 2023 for Toyota Motor Corp. were up 6.6% year over year, up 11% for Hyundai Motor Co. and up 23% for Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. Global sales for Tesla Inc. were up 38%.

Stellantis NV will also report its annual sales on Wednesday. Ford Motor Co. will report sales on Thursday.
