Last week, popular Ferndale restaurant Voyager suffered exterior damage during a storm and has been closed since Wednesday.

According to an Instagram post, the storm that rolled through on April 17 ripped the roof off the nearby auto shop, which "destroyed the electrical and gas infrastructure behind our building and landed on our roof and staff's cars." No one was injured.

Debris from the roof of the Auto Pro Service Center on Nine Mile in Ferndale damaged cars after storms rolled through Metro Detroit, April 17, 2024. The restaurant Voyager is the small building on the left side of the photo, next to the auto shop.

It's not known how long Voyager will be closed as repairs are made, but owner Eli Boyer and his team aren't sitting idle in the meantime. The restaurant will have pop-up service this weekend at nearby Urbanrest Brewing's downtown location on W. Nine Mile.

"If I know one thing about this place, we’ll come back quicker than you think and stronger than ever. We always do," said Boyer on Instagram.

The pop up starts at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and will last until food is sold out. The menu has freshly shucked East and West Coast oysters, Maine and Connecticut lobster rolls, peel-and-eat shrimp, tuna crudo and smoked trout salad. No reservations or tickets are needed. Urbanrest's downtown location is at 210 W. Nine Mile in Ferndale.

Voyager, which is in a tiny building at 600 Vester in Ferndale, opened in 2017 and was named one of Esquire's Best New Restaurants in America and one of the Food & Wine Restaurants of the Year in 2018.

Boyer is selling apparel to help raise funds for the restaurant's hourly staff. Visit voyagerferndale.com/shop to purchase a blue T-shirt with the phrase "smooth seas don't make strong sailors" or a Voyager cap. The restaurant is also selling gift cards for future visits.
