6 shot overnight in Detroit as 2018 begins

Detroit — Six people were shot in six separate incidents overnight in the city during a timespan ranging from the final hour of 2017 to the early hours of 2018.

One victim is a teenage girl, another is a man who was shot in his head and abandoned at a hospital, five took place east of Woodward Avenue, four incidents involve victims who claim only that they heard gunshots before realizing they'd been hit, and only one offers a suspect description. 

At 11 p.m., at Dix and Woodmere in southwest Detroit, a 33-year-old white male was shot in his left hand and privately conveyed to an area hospital. When police caught up with him, he said he'd been leaving a liquor store in the area, heard a "pop" and realized it was him who'd been shot. He was in stable condition at last report. 

Thirteen miles away, on the east side at Gratiot and Seven Mile, a 25-year-old black male was shot in his "lower left stomach" before being privately conveyed to an area hospital. The shooting required surgery, and the victim was in critical condition at last report.

Police say the victim was dropped off at the hospital by a man who told hospital security the victim had been shot at Navarro and Gratiot, but police determined he was shot at 7 Mile and Gratiot.

Just after midnight on the 17500 block of Wanda — north of East McNichols and east of John R — a 47-year-old black male was shot in his groin before being privately conveyed to an area hospital. 

The man told police he was outside his own home when he heard "several gunshots" coming from the McNichols area, then realized he'd been shot in his groin. He was listed in serious condition. 

At 12:30 a.m. at Gratiot and Eastburn, south of Eight Mile, a black female, 17, was shot in her left thigh before being privately conveyed to the hospital.

The victim told police she was in the back seat of a Buick Verano when she heard gunshots and realized her left thigh had been shot. She was listed in temporary serious condition.

Fifteen minutes later, a 24-year-old black male was shot in his head and "multiple" areas of his body in an incident that left him in critical condition. Police believe the incident took place on the 800 block of East State Fair, just west of Interstate 75.

After being shot, the victim was privately conveyed to the hospital in a white pick-up truck, which itself had "several bullet holes in the rear panel." Hospital staff found the victim in the rear passenger seat, but the driver of the truck had fled the scene.

At 2 a.m., a 36-year-old man was shot in his left bicep and took a "through and through" wound to his back after being confronted while walking on the 8900 block of Quinn, which is south of Seven Mile and east of Van Dyke. 

The victim was confronted and shot by an unknown black male, weighing 250 to 300 pounds, with an afro and a mustache, who was wearing a dark Starter jacket and brown Timberland shoes.
