Franklin's funeral remains closed to public

Despite rumors that circulated over the weekend, Aretha Franklin's funeral service on Aug. 31 will remain a private affair. 

Aretha Franklin's publicist Gwendolyn Quinn reiterated Monday that the public is welcome at an Aug. 28 and 29 viewing but that next Friday's funeral isn't open to the public.

Fans and well-wishers may pay their respects at the viewings which will be held from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. each of those dates at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History at 315 E. Warren. 

Franklin's funeral will be held Aug. 31 at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit.

"The funeral is for friends, family and invited guests only," Quinn said.

Franklin, 76, died Thursday from advanced pancreatic cancer. 

The tribute concert planned for Aug. 30 will be open to the public, although plans for that are still in flux.
