Arctic blast headed for Metro Detroit next week

The calendar may say it's fall, but it's going to feel like winter for much of next week in Metro Detroit.

While highs will reach the 40s this weekend, get ready for a bitter blast of Arctic air Monday. According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are likely on Veterans' Day, with a high near 34 and a low that night around 20.

As the week progresses, the cold is expected to intensify. Tuesday's high is forecast to be near 28, with a low around 16, while temperatures staying below freezing Wednesday, with a high near 30 and a low of about 23. On the bright side, the skies will be mostly sunny, according to the weather service

The pre-winter cold snap could break records. The coldest high temperature recorded for Nov. 12 in Detroit is 31, set in 1995, while the record low temperature for that date is 12.

A slight warmup with increasing cloudiness is forecast toward the end of the week, with highs in the mid to upper 30s Thursday and Friday.

Average temperatures for November in the Detroit area, according to the weather service, are highs in the upper 40s and lows in the mid 30s.
