Detroit — Police are investigating the Sunday theft of nearly 800 gallons of fuel from a gas station on the city's west side, officials said.

Officer Justin Hearn, a Detroit Police Department spokesman, said authorities were called to the business in the 10000 block of West Eight Mile Road near Wyoming Avenue for a report of a larceny.

A store employee told officers nearly 800 gallons of gasoline were stolen by a person or people who used some type of electronic device to override the controls of a gasoline pump and obtain the fuel without paying for it.

"We don't know what kind of device was used, but we know it was an electronic device," Hearn said.

Hearn said the alleged theft is under investigation and police have no further details to release at this time.
