One person is dead and four others injured after a vehicle plowed into a U-Haul box truck on Monday in Detroit, Michigan State Police said.

The agency reported the incident on the Lodge Freeway near West Grand Boulevard around 3:50 p.m. in a statement on social media.

In an update, state police said the Detroit Regional Communication Center received reports of a serious crash headed south on the freeway near Seward Avenue, noting a "U-Haul box truck was disabled and partially in the left lane."

As the driver of a Chevy Cobalt merged from the center lane to the left lane, the driver struck the rear end of the U-Haul, according to the investigation.

The driver was killed in the crash, authorities said. The three children and one adult in the Chevy sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital, they added.

The two in the U-Haul were not hurt.

Families were notified on the scene, police said.
