Police probe fatal weekend shooting on Detroit's west side

Detroit police are seeking four suspects in connection with a fatal shooting last weekend on the city's west side.

Charles Fitzgerald, the city's assistant police chief, said Monday at a media briefing that the suspects were stealing a store clerk's car and shot him when confronted.

Officers were called at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to the 10600 block of West Chicago between Myers Road and Wyoming Avenue for a report of a shooting, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 43-year-old man tried to stop multiple suspects from breaking into his vehicle when he was shot.

Media reports said the shooting happened at the All Stars Beverage liquor store and the victim was an employee.

"A store clerk was coming out to drop off some trash when he observed what appeared to be his vehicle with the reverse lights on backing through the parking lot," Fitzgerald said. "He made an attempt to run up to the car. There was an individual that jumped out of a burgundy Hyundai... fired four rounds in his direction. He was able to retrieve possibly 10 to 15 feet before he collapsed."

Police said medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

"It looked like that Hyundai was occupied four times. These kids were all masked up," the assistant chief said. "One young man had a black hoodie, black mask. One young man had a white hoodie, with a partial mask on. Our shooter, who had a 9 mm handgun, he had a blue and black jacket on. He was in the passenger side of the Hyundai."

Fitzgerald believes the suspects may be between 16 and 21 years old based on their body frame in the surveillance footage. The burgundy Hyundai they pulled off in is missing its front bumper, he said.

Anyone who sees the vehicle or has any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or 911.

Reports also identified the victim as Thair Dado of Sterling Heights.

A GoFundMe page to raise $100,000 for Dado's family was started Sunday. As of Monday morning, the page had raised nearly $29,000.

"Loved ones have created a GoFundMe for the family of THAIR DADO, a man killed Saturday night while working at a liquor store in Detroit," the page said. "THAIR was a devoted, hardworking man, a loving husband to his wife Zina Francis, and an amazing father to his son, Steven."

According to the post, he was the family's sole breadwinner and his son is 16 years old.
