A Macomb County man accused of pointing a gun at a motorist while driving on Interstate 94 in Detroit on Thursday was arrested, Michigan State Police said.

Officials said troopers were at the scene of a crash on eastbound I-94 near Grand River Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday when a motorist stooped and told them someone had pointed a gun at him while traveling on the freeway.

He told troopers he and the suspect were involved in a road rage incident while in a traffic backup due to the crash, according to authorities.

They broadcast the information and a description of the suspect's vehicle to police. Officials said troopers in the area spotted the suspect vehicle near Woodward Avenue and pulled the driver over.

Police spoke to the driver, a 47-year-old Ray Township man, and detained him. They found the man had a handgun with him and a valid license to carry it.

Officials said the man was taken to the Detroit Detention Center to await charges.

"Here is another example of a CPL holder not being able to handle their emotions because traffic was slowed due to a crash," First Lt. Mike Shaw, a Michigan State Police spokesman, said in a statement. "This suspect lost their cool, grabbed an accessible handgun, and put others at risk. We are lucky he didn’t pull the trigger."
