Fire reported at DTE substation in downtown Detroit

Officials are investigating a fire that erupted Friday afternoon at a DTE Energy substation in downtown Detroit.

The incident was first reported in the 600 block of Howard Street near Third.

City fire crews and DTE officials responded to the scene, while Detroit police cars blocked nearby ends of Howard.

Employees at the Cambria Hotel next door said they heard a loud boom and reported losing electricity in the building.

DTE Energy shut off the electricity at the facility to ensure safety for the crews, first responders and others in the surrounding area, the utility said in a statement.

Officials rerouted electric service to nearby buildings, and no nearby outages were related to the incident, according to the statement.

Other details were not released.

City fire officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
