A suspect who was shot and wounded by police Monday at the Belle Isle State Park in Detroit is in stable condition, officials said.

The suspect is a 34-year-old man and the shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m., Michigan State Police said. MSP are handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect on Monday failed to appear in court for a felony case trial.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office Tether Unit tracked him to a wooded area on Belle Isle, officials said.

Scott Gatti, chief of operations for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, said Monday the suspect was wearing a court-ordered GPS tether. Members of the unit located the suspect in a marshy area on Belle Isle north of the golf course, he said.

They went to the location, called out to the suspect and identified themselves, he said. The suspect was armed with a long gun and pointed it at the deputies, Gatti said. State police later said the weapon was a 9mm rifle.

The officers fired at the suspect. He was struck and fell into the water, Gatti said.

He said they raced to the suspect, pulled him out of the water, rendered first aid and applied a tourniquet to his leg. They also called for an ambulance, which took the suspect to a hospital.

Gatti said the investigation into the shooting was turned over to the Michigan State Police. He added the sheriff's office will also conduct an internal investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the deputies involved in the shooting were being interviewed, he said.

He added a determination on whether they will be placed on leave while the investigation is conducted will be made later.
