Four people, including two young children and a pregnant woman, were hospitalized after they were injured in a shooting on Detroit's west side late Wednesday, said police Chief James White.

The adult victims were hospitalized in serious condition; the children, ages 3 and 6, were in stable condition, the chief said. An 18-year-old victim is pregnant, White said.

The shooting happened at Westfield and Faust avenues at about 8:55 p.m.

"It's frustrating. We have to keep our kids safe, I've said it many times," White told reporters outside Children's Hospital of Michigan at Detroit Medical Center.

"A coward with a gun decided to bring (the gun) ... it's awful, and we're going to do everything we can to get them off the street. All night, if it takes that, but its ridiculous," he said.

The shooting followed a fight between two females when "one of the females got the best of the other one (and) she called a male companion over who had a firearm in his backpack," White said citing preliminary information. He produced the gun and shot the four victims, White said.

"The two children that were shot had absolutely nothing to do with the confrontation," said the chief, who added that they were not related to other victims or suspects. "They appeared to just be in the park, enjoying a warm spring afternoon or evening."

Police are looking for two teen suspects, a male and female. Investigators will review footage and witness information, White said.
