A 4-year-old boy died Monday after he was in a three-car crash on Interstate 75 and Piquette Avenue in Detroit, state police said.

Troopers at about 1:10 p.m. Monday received calls about a crash on northbound I-75 and Piquette reporting three vehicles were involved and that a child had possibly been hit, officials said.

Police arrived at the scene of the crash and found the 4-year-old on the ground and unresponsive. Troopers began rendering aid to the child before medics came and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the boy's mother, a 30-year-old woman, was the at-fault driver in the crash and they suspect she was driving while impaired.

They determined the boy was not properly restrained in his seat before the crash.

“This crash is under investigation by the MSP Crash Reconstruction Unit and the Metro South Post," Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw, a spokesman for the agency's Second District, said on X. "There are several more things to finish and an investigators' report will be submitted to the prosecutor when completed."
