A 91-year-old River Rouge man died Monday after the car he traveled in was in a crash on Interstate 75 in Detroit, state police said.

Dispatchers received calls about a crash on northbound I-75 at Canfield Avenue at about 1:25 p.m., officials said.

Troopers arrived and found the 91-year-old unconscious at the scene. Medics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 72-year-old River Rouge woman was driving on the freeway when she came upon a traffic backup caused by a previous crash. The 91-year-old was a passenger in her vehicle.

Investigators said the woman rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped in traffic. Her vehicle continued traveling and hit a semi-tractor trailer as it stopped in traffic, according to authorities.

Troopers said the woman complained of chest pain and medics took her to a hospital.

Officials said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and they will submit a report to the county prosecutor's office after it is completed.
