1 dead, 2 injured in Sterling Heights house fire

Sterling Heights — One person remained in the hospital with injuries Sunday after a fire Saturday night that resulted in the death of a resident and injuries to two others.

At about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Sterling Heights police and fire departments were dispatched to the 2400 block of Haff Drive, near Dequindre and 19 Mile roads for reports of a house fire, according to a release from police.

When they arrived, the home was already fully engulfed and one person was already dead inside.

Fire officials said Sunday that they have indications as to the cause of the fire, but declined to comment further because the incident remains under investigation.

A Sterling Heights firefighter who sustained minor injuries in the fire was treated at a hospital and has since been released, the fire department said.

Officials did not have updates on the condition of the other victim, an occupant of the home, as of Sunday afternoon. Officials also could not provide the identity of the victim who died in the fire.

Interim fire chief Edwin Miller said the incident is a reminder of the importance of having working smoke detectors, as well as an escape plan should a fire break out in your home. He said there were functioning smoke detectors in the home on Haff Drive, but that it's unclear at this time whether that's what alerted the residents to the fire.
