A Florida man has been charged in connection with an abduction Monday in Shelby Township, officials said.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said it has charged a 38-year-old Tampa resident with 12 crimes, including carjacking, armed robbery, torture, first-degree home invasion, and using a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Shelby Township police said they received a call at 7:15 p.m. Monday about a kidnapping in the parking lot of the Lifetime Fitness gym at 14843 Lakeside Boulevard near Hayes and Hall roads.

Officers determined a 24-year-old man had been abducted by four armed men. They said the incident did not appear to be random.

According to prosecutors, the 38-year-old suspect and three other unknown suspects carjacked the victim at gunpoint, restrained him in his own vehicle, and drove away.

Authorities said the suspect tortured the victim, drove him to his own home and went inside.

Officers with the Sterling Heights Police Department were informed of the abduction at about 8 p.m. Monday, police said.

They arrived at the victim’s home and the suspects took him with them and fled in his vehicle, the prosecutor's office said.

Police said they located the vehicle as it traveled on Dearing Drive near 15 Mile and Dodge Park roads in Sterling Heights.

Officers tried to pull the vehicle over but it fled and a chase ensued, police said. They pursued the vehicle for about half a mile until it crashed in the area of 15 Mile and Maple Lane.

Officials said three people — one adult male and two juveniles — exited the crashed vehicle and ran. They arrested the adult.

Shelby Township police said there were four suspects in the vehicle and three remain at large.

In the vehicle, they also found a 24-year-old man who had been tied up. The man suffered minor injuries, police said.

Investigators also found a loaded rifle inside the vehicle.

Police said the suspect arrested was taken to the Macomb County Jail to await charges.

Detectives said the two minors do not appear to be connected to the alleged abduction.

Authorities continue to investigate.

Anyone with information about the kidnapping should call the Shelby Township Police Department at (586) 731-2121.
