A Clinton Township man accused of fatally shooting his wife last fall will stand trial in Macomb County Circuit Court.

Steven Wheeler, 30, is charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm in connection with his wife's slaying in October. He was bound over to Circuit Court by 41-A District Court Judge Stephen Sierawski, said the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office on Thursday in a news release.

Prosecutors allege that Wheeler was assaulting his wife on Oct. 19 when the wife, whose name was not released, called 911 and asked police for help. While she was on the phone, Wheeler allegedly fatally shot her multiple times, the Prosecutor's Office said.

"The brutality of domestic violence has once again shattered lives," said Prosecutor Peter Lucido. "This incident not only extinguished a precious life but underscores the urgent need to confront and eradicate domestic abuse from our communities."

Wheeler remains in custody at the county jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Macomb County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. May 13 before Judge Julie Gatti, the Prosecutor's Office said.
