New MSU president names 2 sexual misconduct advisers

Michigan State University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. appointed two advisers on Monday to assist him in addressing sexual misconduct issues. 

Rebecca Campbell and Andrea Munford, who both worked with victims of abuser Larry Nassar and have extensive backgrounds in helping victims of sexual assault, were named to the positions just weeks into Stanley's presidency. 

"I personally think that this is one of the smartest and wisest decisions he could have made," Nassar survivor and victim advocate Larissa Boyce said. "They are both experts in their field and have been involved in sexual abuse cases for years." 

Campbell is a psychology professor at the university and chair of the Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Expert Advisory Workgroup. Munford is a lieutenant with the MSU Police Department's Center for Trauma-Informed Investigative Excellence. 

Boyce recalled filing a police report with Munford, who helped build the case against Nassar, when she attended Michigan State from the late 1990s to early 2000s. 

"She was the first police officer I spoke with and she was in court every day we gave our impact statements," Boyce said. "She is a very strong advocate for all of us survivors and an advocate for positive change on MSU's campus."

Boyce said both women are "wonderful listeners" and supporters of sexual assault survivors.

"They are two of the best people he could have appointed," Boyce said. "They both make you feel known and heard like you are a real person, they make you feel safe. They are two of my favorite people."
