A Grosse Pointe Woods woman was sentenced Friday to 5-15 years in prison for driving drunk and fatally striking Fraser High School teacher Connor McMahon last year.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Bridget Hathaway handed down the sentence to Brooke Lynn-Denise Charles.

Charles pleaded no contest in November to a charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence, causing death, according to court records. Her attorney was not readily available for comment Friday.

In Michigan, courts treat no contest pleas the same as guilty pleas.

Charles was charged in connection with the fatal crash in June. Charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and resisting arrest were dismissed, according to court records.

Authorities accused Charles of driving her car off the road on Interstate 94 while she was intoxicated, striking and killing Connor McMahon, 23, of Roseville, on June 13. She then ran away from the scene but was arrested by Harper Woods police.

Police said McMahon was changing a flat tire on the freeway's right shoulder near the Eight Mile/Vernier Road exit in Harper Woods when Charles struck him.

Michigan State Police troopers were called to the scene where they found McMahon, a graduate of Fraser High School and the University of Michigan.
