A Clinton County jury has found a man guilty for killing a hunter in Bath Township more than five years ago.

Thomas Olson, 35, shot Chong Yang in the head on Nov. 16, 2018 in Rose Lake State Park, officials reported.

Investigators alleged the Grand Blanc resident also stole Yang's headlamp, knife, backpack and shotgun.

Yang's family had been searching for him after he did not return home from hunting at his usual park by evening that day.

The family found Yang's car in the state park parking lot. Footprints led them to Yang's body, which they found with a gunshot wound to the head.

Yang was 68 years old.

Police found Olson after a three-year investigation with witness testimony and a plastic bag with hunting spray found near the scene, the Michigan Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

A jury found Olson guilty on Thursday of one count of second-degree murder and one count of carrying a firearm while committing a felony.

“I am grateful for the dedicated work of the prosecutors in my office, as well as the determination of the Bath Township Police Department and the FBI in their years long pursuit in resolving this cold case,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in the release.

“This murder shocked the Bath Township and Michigan hunting communities, and it is our hope that this conviction may bring some peace and healing to Mr. Yang's friends and family."

Olson's lawyer, Michael Manley, was not immediately available for comment Friday.

Olson will be sentenced on April 8.
