Gas prices in Michigan are up 5 cents since last week, making state drivers pay an average of$3.62per gallon for regular unleaded, AAA officials announced Monday.

The price is 31 cents more than this time last month and 9 cents more than a year ago, according to AAA-The Auto Club Group.

Motorists are paying an average of $54 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline, the group said in a statement.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration, gas demand dipped slightly from 8.81 to 8.72 million barrels. Lower demand would typically contribute to pushing pump prices lower or slowing increases, but rising oil prices have kept them elevated instead, according to AAA's release.

Patrick De Hann, oil and refined product analyst at GasBuddy, tweeted Monday morning that the national gas price average is $3.51 for regular unleaded gasoline.

"Despite the slight decrease in demand, Michigan gas prices are up compared to last week," said Adrienne Woodland, AAA's spokesperson, in its release Monday. "Pump prices will likely face upward pressure if gasoline stocks continue to decrease alongside rising oil prices."

Metro Detroit’s average is slightly above the state's, at $3.58 per gallon, or about 2 cents more than last week’s average and 8 cents more than the same time in 2023.

The most expensive gas price averages are in Jackson ($3.66), Benton Harbor ($3.65) and Grand Rapids ($3.65).

The least expensivegas price averages are in Marquette ($3.52), Metro Detroit ($3.58) and Traverse City ($3.60).
