Traffic was picking up Monday in southeast Michigan as some travelers headed to prime viewing spots for the solar eclipse.

There were traffic slowdowns southbound Interstate 75 in Monroe County before noon, especially in the Monroe area.

The Michigan Department of Transportation website showed a congested stretch near Laplaisance Road. That's north of Luna Pier, which experts believe is the lone place in the state where there will be a total eclipse.

Traffic slows to a halt in South Rockwood, Michigan, about 20 miles north of Luna Pier, Michigan, where the 2024 solar eclipse will be 100% visible on Monday, April 8, 2024.

"Closer to or in Ohio traffic is probably heavier," First Lt. Mike Shaw, public information officer for the Michigan State Police Second District, said in an email to The Detroit News.

In Ohio, where viewers were expected to have a greater glimpse, the state's transportation department showed heavy traffic on U.S. 23 headed into Sylvania and on I-75 near Toledo.

On Sunday, MSP also posted tips on social for how to see the eclipse safely.

Monroe County officials shared similar driving-related advice.
