2 Lansing police officers, suspect shot in traffic stop arrest

Two Lansing police officers and a suspect were shot during a traffic stop arrest early Wednesday, officials said.

The officers and a 28-year-old man sustained nonlife-threatening injuries after the suspect disarmed a detective and fired the gun at two officers, said Jordan Gulkis, public information director for the Lansing Police Department.

Detectives at about 11:13 a.m. were conducting a follow-up investigation for a violent crime earlier in the week, Gulkis said. The suspect's connection to the probe was unclear.

They requested help from two uniformed officers in patrol cars, who conducted a traffic stop on the suspect behind an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Holmes Road and Simken Drive, near Pleasant Grove Road, on the city's south side.

The officers attempted to arrest the suspect, who allegedly tried to flee on foot, Gulkis said.

A struggle ensued between police and the man after he fired the detective's weapon, striking two police officers, according to the investigation.

One officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

"Officers immediately performed life-saving measures on the accused prior to him being transported to a local hospital," Gulkis said. "The two detectives, the two patrol officers and the accused sustained non-life-threatening injuries."

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor thanked police for "for keeping our community safe every day."

"First and foremost, my thoughts are going out to the two officers who were shot by this suspect," Schor said in a statement. "Chief Sosebee and I have been in constant contact and he is keeping me fully apprised of this situation.

"Our police officers are the best in the state and work to protect and serve Lansing and I never want them to be put in place to have to draw their weapons or return fire."

Michigan State Police is investigating the shooting, Schor said.
