Consumers planning to attend the NFL Draft in Detroit next week should be on guard against price gouging related to the event, Michigan's Attorney General said.

"Fans should be able to enjoy the Draft without being nickel-and-dimed by excessively high prices," Dana Nessel said in a Friday statement. "My office will be on the lookout for any business that tries to take advantage of attendees."

Nessel said state law bans retailers from charging excess prices for goods and services. However, she said, a general increase may not mean price gouging because many businesses adjust rates during high-demand events like the draft.

She said she encourages consumers to shop around and compare rates and other expenses in advance to get the best deal.

Anyone who suspects price gouging should contact the Consumer Protection Team of the Attorney General's office at (517) 335-7599, (877) 765-8388, or submit a complaint online.

Throngs of NFL fans are expected to descend on Detroit's downtown next week for the 2024 draft, when the league's 32 teams will select their newest recruits.

The draft officially begins at noon Thursday and runs through 6 p.m. Saturday. It will be held in Campus Martius and Hart Plaza.

Police said they have plans in place to handle the crowds downtown and across the city.
