The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for all of southeast Michigan on Wednesday as temperatures are expected to plunge before heating up on the weekend.

Temperatures from as far south as Monroe to as north as Bad Axe will hover in the 20s starting at midnight, NWS Detroit announced in a post on X.

The freeze warning covers Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties.

Freezing conditions will persist through 8 a.m. Thursday morning and could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing or sensitive vegetation, according to NWS.

Temperatures will dip as a cold front bearing cold air from Canada comes over the region, said Dave Kook, a meteorologist with the weather service.

A warm front after Wednesday will lift temperatures across the region back beyond freezing, he said.

The mercury is expected to rise back to the mid-50s on Thursday with chilly conditions prevailing through that evening, NWS Detroit said.

Sunny skies continue into Friday, when NWS projects a high of 65 and a lows around 39.

Rain could still develop Friday night and showers and thunderstorms are possible on Saturday, when highs around 76 are predicted.

"We're not expecting much in the way of severe weather chances until Sunday night or more likely Monday," Kook said.
