Body of missing kayaker recovered in U.P's Delta County

The body of a male missing kayaker, whose disappearance spurred a search in Michigan's Upper Peninsula over the weekend, was found Tuesday afternoon, the Delta County Sheriff's Office announced.

"At approximately 1:00pm today searchers recovered the body of the missing Kayaker in approximately 14 feet of water," the Delta County Sheriff's Office said in a post on social media.

News of the discovery comes after the U.S. Coast Guard's 9th District suspended the search for the man in the central U.P on Monday, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The U.S. Coast Guard "suspends search for overdue kayaker, pending any further developments," the post said. "Coast Guard and partner agency crews searched for approximately 12.5 hours covering 53 square miles with no sightings of the kayaker."

The Delta County Sheriff's Office earlier Tuesday said it would continue to search for the missing man. The victim's kayak was found at about 2 a.m. floating upside down about a half mile from shore, the county sheriff's office reported.

It also said deputies with the office began searching for the kayaker on Sunday. It dispatched deputies at about 7 p.m. Sunday to the Stonington area after receiving reports of his disappearance, according to authorities.

"The 29-year-old male from Lower Michigan was kayaking alone in Little Bay De Noc off of Stonington and had not returned," officials said in a post Tuesday on the agency's Facebook page. "Search crews were dispatched and the water and land were extensively searched into the night."

Earlier Monday, Coast Guard officials said the search for the kayaker started in Rapid River after he was reported overdue.

It also said members of the Coast Guard's stations in Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin, Air Station Traverse City and deputies with the Delta County Sheriff's Office were searching for the missing kayaker. They said the man's green and blue kayak was found overturned Sunday night after they pinged his cellphone.

Rapid River is on the northern tip of Lake Michigan's Little Bay de Noc and about 16 miles north of Escanaba.

The Delta County Sheriff's Office said it would release details of the search and discovery Wednesday.
