A Royal Oak man was arrested Monday after a three-hour standoff with police who were called to his home for an alleged assault, officials said.

Royal Oak police officers were called at about 5 p.m. Monday to a home in the 1600 block of Whitcomb Avenue near North Campbell Road between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads. Officers were told a suspect assaulted a relative.

Police arrived and the male suspect retreated into his home then barricaded himself inside along with his wife and two children, authorities said.

Officers tried to speak with the man who they said displayed signs of a mental health crisis and refused to exit the house, police reported.

They also learned the man had long guns in the home and was wearing a bulletproof vest.

After crisis negotiators tried several times to convince the suspect to exit the home, a special tactics team for the Oakland County Sheriff's Office took the man into custody.

Police said the suspect suffered minor injuries from an electric stun gun being used on him. No other injuries were reported.

Officers recovered from the home guns, ammunition, night vision goggles and a tactical vest, investigators said.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and the suspect will likely face assault charges.

"The outcome of this incident was the culmination of outstanding teamwork between members of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Troy Police Department and Royal Oak Police officers," Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore said in a statement. "While the subject is facing criminal charges from this incident, officers and deputies on the scene did a great job being aware of the subject's mental health and took extra measures to bring this incident to a peaceful conclusion."
