Bloomfield Township police arrested an Oakland County man last weekend after they caught him driving the wrong way on Telegraph Road.

Officers received multiple 911 calls around 9 p.m. Sunday about a motorist in a white Volvo traveling south in Telegraph's northbound lanes near Long Lake Road, authorities reported.

Police spotted the Volvo traveling the wrong way on Telegraph and approaching Quarton Road. Officers activated their lights and sirens to get the northbound traffic to slow down.

Officials said the suspect vehicle was traveling at about 50 mph and nearly struck a motorcyclist. Police got behind the vehicle and pursued it as the Volvo continued to drive the wrong way.

Investigators said the suspect driver eventually saw the emergency police lights and heard the sirens. He pulled the Volvo over near Country Club Drive.

Police spotted the Volvo traveling the wrong way on Telegraph and approaching Quarton Road.

Police approached the driver, identified as a 55-year-old Wixom resident. Officers could smell the odor of intoxicants coming from him and the driver slurred his speech and was unsteady on his feet, investigators said.

During questioning, the driver told officers he drank a $3.99 bottle of Bay Bridge wine, authorities said.

After putting the driver through a field sobriety test, they arrested him for suspected drunk driving. Officers took the man to the police station where he consented to a breathalyzer test. According to the test, the man's blood alcohol level was .18 percent and more than twice the legal limit.

Officials said they held the man at the station overnight and released him with a citation.

"We commend our officers for their quick reaction and warning to motorists that may have prevented a severe crash," police said in a statement Wednesday. "Driving under the influence is not only against the law, but it puts the lives of innocent individuals at risk."

The man was one of five impaired drivers Bloomfield Township police officers arrested in the last week, according to officials.
