State police: Two women killed in wrong-way driver crash on I-75

Two women were killed early Saturday after a motorist driving the wrong way on Interstate 75 struck another motorist, Michigan State Police reported.

The wrong-way driver was a 21-year-old woman from Garden City; the other driver was a 56-year-old woman from Brownstown Charter Township, police said.

“Our traffic crash reconstructionist is investigating this crash," 1st Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police said in a tweet. “At this time we are not sure why the at fault driver entered the freeway the wrong way. We are waiting on autopsy results to see if impairment was a factor."Around 4 a.m. Saturday the 21-year-old woman, who was driving a Chevy Equinox, entered I-75 the wrong way and was traveling north in the southbound lanes near Outer Drive in Lincoln Park, MSP Second District tweeted.

The 21-year-old driver struck a Jeep heading southbound in the left lane driven by the 56-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 21-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The drivers' families have been notified and the investigation is continuing, police said.
