A Dearborn Heights woman has been charged in the non-fatal shooting of her boyfriend in a domestic violence incident Wednesday.

Leah Renee Johnson, 30, was arraigned Friday at Dearborn Heights’ 20th District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder and felony firearm, Dearborn Heights police said. Johnson is being held on a $500,000 bond, and if posted, will be required to wear a tether.

Police said around 2:30 a.m. May 1, officers found a 41-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck in the bedroom of the couple's home in the 25100 block of Colgate Street. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators concluded the shooting resulted from a verbal altercation between the couple that escalated, police said.

Dearborn Heights Police Chief Jerrod Hart expressed concern over the growing number of domestic violence incidents and praised officers and support staff for their handling of the incident.

“Relationship issues continue to plague our community with aggravated assault, stalking, and assault & battery occupying the top tier of criminal activity in Dearborn Heights," Hart said in a statement.

"We are actively working behind the scenes with our corporation counsel, Roger Farinha and others in the judicial system to find preventative programs such as juvenile court, mediation referrals, and streamlining such cases within our 20th District Court to provide faster intervention and improved victim services."

"I also offer my thoughts and prayers to the shooting victim and his loved ones in this incident as they continue to cope with the realities of this tragic incident," Hart said.
