OctoPulse podcast: Trade deadline recap, Ted Nolan interview

The Detroit News

Ted Kulfan takes a look at the Red Wings after the trade deadline and former Red Wing Ted Nolan is the special guest.

Detroit made one minor deal before Friday afternoon's deadline. They sent forward Klim Kostin to the Sharks for defenseman Radim Simek and a seventh-round draft choice in 2024.

The Red Wings sent forward Klim Kostin, left, to the Sharks for defenseman Radim Simek and a seventh-round draft choice in 2024.

On Friday night, the Wings played what Kulfan called "one of the poorest periods of hockey all season" and lost 4-0 in Arizona. They are tied for the final wild-card berth with Tampa Bay, two points ahead of the Islanders.

"It's amazing how things can change in an instant," Kulfan said on the podcast. "It seemed like the Wings were comfortable in their position and leading by a handful of points.

"Suddenly they're far from being secure like they did a few weeks ago. That's what a four-game losing streak can do while the Islanders and some of these teams are rolling."

On Feb. 27, the Red Wings were a season-high 13 games over .500 with a 33-20-6 record after beating the Capitals, 8-3.

After Saturday's 5-3 loss against the Golden Knights, they're 33-25-6 following a five-game losing streak heading into Tuesday's game in Buffalo.

During the five-game losing streak, the Wings have been outscored 25-8 by the Islanders, Panthers, Avalanche, Coyotes and Golden Knights. Here's the worst plus-minus players during that stretch.

Minus-8: Lucas Raymond, including team-worst, minus-3 against Vegas

Minus-7: Moritz Seider

Minus-6: Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot, Alex DeBrincat

Minus-5: Jake Walman, Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher averaging a team-high 20:57 among forwards. Walman was a healthy scratch against Vegas.

Minus-3: Shayne Gostisbehere, Michael Rasmussen

Notes: Compher and DeBrincat are the only two players who have been minus players in all five games during the losing streak. Raymond is now tied for the team-worst, minus-17 rating with Gostisbehere. Joe Veleno is -15, including -2 against Vegas. Olli Maata leads the team at plus-16 and Michael Rasmussen is plus-11.
