19-year-old shot, killed was ex-EMU wrestler

A 19-year-old killed last month in Pittsfield Township in an apparent drug deal was a former member of the Eastern Michigan wrestling team, the university confirmed.

Christopher John "Jack" Marsh was a freshman member of the wrestling team before leaving the team for unspecified reasons in January, university spokesman Geoff Larcom told The Detroit News on Wednesday. Larcom said he couldn't disclose the reason for leaving the team, citing student privacy laws.

Marsh was enrolled at Eastern Michigan as recently as April, after leaving the wrestling team, and was an electronic media and film major. He wasn't registered for classes for the upcoming fall semester, Larcom said.

David Bolyard, coach of the wrestling team that recently was eliminated by the university amid budget cuts, was not immediately available for comment.

Marsh, of St. Pius X Catholic in Atlanta, wrestled in six matches at Eastern Michigan, posting a 2-4 record in the 174-pound weight class. He went 1-2 in the Michigan State Open in East Lansing on Nov. 5 and 1-2 in the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti on Nov. 11.

He was 50-3 his senior year in high school, winning a Georgia state championship. He was a team captain at his high school.

Marsh was killed in a shooting the evening of April 28, in the parking lot of Glencoe Hills apartments, just west of Eastern Michigan's Ypsilanti campus.

Last month, Matt Harshberger, director of public safety for Pittsfield Township, told The News that Marsh and two suspects, identified only as men ages 19 and 25, were meeting for a drug deal. During the meeting in the parking lot, the suspects shot the victim multiple times.

No arrests have been made, Harshberger said Thursday.

Pittsfield Township is a community of 38,000 residents in Washtenaw County. This was the township's first homicide of 2018.
