Recap: Michigan dominates Iowa to win Big Ten Championship, 42-3

Michigan is earmarked for the College Football Playoff.

The Wolverines dominated Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday night, cruising past the Hawkeyes with a 42-3 win to earn its first Big Ten Championship since 2004.

Michigan takes over at the 36, moves the ball downfield with a couple runs and a pass interference penalty, and Donovan Edwards eventually punches it in with 1:25 left in the game.

Michigan takes 35-3 lead on Iowa in 4Q

Iowa takes over at its own 25, trailing 28-3 in the fourth.

The Hawkeyes don't get very far. A 4-yard pass, 1-yard pass, and false start sets up third-and-10, where a 5-yard pass doesn't get the job done. Iowa elects to punt, essentially waving the white flag on this game.

After a 1-yard run, Cade McNamara winds up and hits Erick All for a 38-yard pass to set up first-and-10 at the 42 of Iowa.

Hassan Haskins rushes for 11. Two plays later, Cornelius Johnson for 17. This is quite the victory lap for Michigan. A 5-yard run and incompletion sets up third-and-goal at the 5, where McNamara hits All for a 5-yard touchdown.

Michigan delivers knockout punch with blocked punt, TD

Iowa takes over at its own 23, trailing 21-3 with 14:02 to go in the game.

Gavin Williams opens the drive with an 11-yard run, but Aidan Hutchinson forces the ball away on Iowa's second- and third-down passes. Cornelius Johnson blocks the ensuing punt, and Michigan will get it at the Iowa 36. Wowza.

Michigan takes over at the Iowa 36, and J.J. McCarthy rushes for 8 and 5 to give Michigan a new set of downs at the 23.

Luke Schoonmaker makes a one-handed catch to give Michigan a first down at the 1, and who else but Hassan Haskins finishes the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, his 20th of the season. That's a new single-season Michigan record.

Michigan punts ball away to start 4Q

Michigan takes over at its own 15, leading 21-3 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.

A 6-yard loss by Blake Corum starts the drive, and it's third-and-15 after a 1-yard run by Hassan Haskins. That'll bring the third quarter to a close.

Michigan plays it safe and hands off to Haskins for a 3-yard gain. Brad Robbins' punt is downed at the Iowa 23.

Michigan gets huge stop to close 3Q

Alex Padilla takes over at quarterback for Iowa, which takes over at its own 25, trailing 21-3 in the third quarter.

A 17-yard completion gets Iowa a first down at the 44. Iowa keeps moving the ball downfield, picking up another first down with a 10-yard run by Tyler Goodson. It's first-and-10 at the Wolverines 37.

A 4-yard run on first down and 8-yard completion on third down move the chains to the Michigan 25, and another 10-yard run makes it first-and-10 at the 15.

Michigan gets Iowa to third-and-4, where a pass is caught by Sam LaPorta for no gain. Michigan brings the heat on fourth down, and force Padilla to throw it for a completion that loses 7 yards. Turnover on downs.

Michigan 21, Iowa 3 (1:10 3rd)

Michigan gets stop, extends lead to start 3Q

Iowa takes over to start the second half at its own 25. The Hawkeyes trail 14-3.

Spencer Petras' first two passes are short of the target. He puts the third-down pass on a rope for 11 yards and a new set of downs. Michigan is able to get pressure on the next two plays, and Petras throws it away on third down. 

A.J. Henning returns the punt to the Michigan 18.

Michigan 14, Iowa 3 (13:27 3rd)

After a 2-yard run by Hassan Haskins, Cade McNamara hits Cornelius Johnson for 15 yards to the Michigan 35, where it'll be first-and-10.

Haskins moves the chains again with an 8-yard run, and 2-yard run that draws a holding penalty on Iowa. It's first-and-10 at the Iowa 45.

Michigan keeps it on the ground to pick up another first down at the 32. 

Cade McNamara then puts the ball between two defenders to hit luke Schoonmaker up the seam for a 27-yard pickup to the 4, and on the very next play, Haskins finishes the job with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Michigan can't extend lead before halftime

Michigan takes over at its own 9, looking to get something going before halftime.

Donovan Edwards starts the drive with an 11-yard reception to finally give Michigan some juice, but he's dropped for a loss.

Cade McNamara runs for 15 yards on third-and-12 just two plays later, and it's first-and-10 at the Michigan 33. McNamara then gets a throw to Hassan Haskins that's good for 13, and Michigan is creeping up toward midfield.

After a few dud plays, McNamara is sacked for a huge loss on third down to end the drive. Brad Robbins' punt goes for a touchback.

A huge sack from Aidan Hutchinson on Iowa's second play sets up second-and-20, and a 7-yard gain won't cut it on third down. Michigan is gonna get the ball back before halftime.

Michigan will take over at the 32 with 51 seconds left in the half and no timeouts.

Two 6-yard completions set up first-and-10 at the 45, where a 3-yard pass to Haskins forces Michigan to scramble back to the line with the clock ticking. After a second-down incompletion, 11 seconds remain.

The third-down pass is incomplete. One play left. J.J. McCarthy's Hail Mary is intercepted at the goal line to bring the first half to a close.

Iowa playing field position game to keep Michigan from taking charge

Michigan takes over at its own 3, and things don't go well. A 2-yard run, completion for no gain, and multiple defenders in Cade McNamara's face on a third-down incompletion bring the drive to an end quickly.

A 3-yard run and incompletion brings up third-and-7, where a holding penalty erases a run from Petras that goes for a first down. It's third-and-17 after a hit from Rod Moore is reviewed for targeting, but ultimately ruled a clean hit.

Iowa can't get enough on third down and will punt on fourth-and-4.

Defenses tightening up in 2Q as Michigan, Iowa trade punts

Michigan takes over at its own 6, leading 14-3 in the second quarter.

Iowa cuts down Hassan Haskins for two short gains, and Cade McNamara's pass is defended down the sideline. Brad Robbins' punt is returned for a loss to the Iowa 41.

Iowa starts at the 41, and Spencer Petras immediately hits Charlie Jones for a gain of 13 to the Michigan 46.

Two short gains bring up third-and-4 for the Hawkeyes; Petras throws into double coverage, incomplete.

Michigan avoids disaster after INT

Michigan takes over at its own 25, leading 14-3, with 1:26 to go in the first quarter.

A.J. Henning takes off for 29 yards to start the drive, giving Michigan first-and-10 at the Iowa 46. Cade McNamara's second-down pass is dropped by Erick All, and it goes right into the arms of an Iowa linebacker. The Hawkeyes take over at the 33.

Spencer Petras is hit as he throws on third down, but the drive is extended by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Michigan's Taylor Upshaw.

A 2-yard gain moves Iowa into Michigan territory, but a tripping penalty on the next play makes it second-and-23 at the Iowa 37. Iowa runs it twice before punting on fourth-and-13.

Iowa cuts deficit to 14-3

Iowa takes over at its own 25, trailing 14-0 in the first quarter.

Spencer Petras picks up third-and-7 with a 10-yard pass, and hits Charlie Jones for a 28-yard gain just two plays later to give Iowa first-and-goal at the 9 of Michigan.

Iowa can't find the end zone, though, as a third-down incompletion brings out the field-goal unit. Caleb Shudak puts it home from 22 yards out.

Iowa takes over at its own 25, trailing 7-0.

A deep shot that falls incomplete and 3-yard run brings up third-and-7, where Spencer Petras' pass is simply thrown away.

A.J. Henning returns the Iowa punt to Michigan's 25, where it'll be first-and-10.

Donovan Edwards loads up for a halfback pass of his own, and it's an absolute dime to Roman Wilson for a 75-yard touchdown pass. Un-be-lievable.

Corum's big run puts Michigan on top

After a false start, Michigan picks up its first first down of the game with a 6-yard completion to Donovan Edwards.

J.J. McCarthy enters on the very next play, and he lead blocks for Blake Corum after handing the ball off, leading to a 67-yard Michigan touchdown.

The Wolverines are leading in Indy.

Michigan-Iowa scoreless after missed FG

Iowa has won the toss, and elects to defer. Michigan will get it first, taking over at the 25.

After a dumpoff to Roman Wilson that goes for 7, Iowa stops Hassan Haskins for no gain and brings down Mike Sainristil short of the sticks on third down.

Brad Robbins' punt is fair caught at the 26 of Iowa.

Michigan 0, Iowa 0 (13:17 1st)

Iowa starts at the 26. In two plays, the Hawkeyes are at the 40, first-and-10. Michigan then gets Iowa to third-and-7, but Daxton Hill is called for pass interference on a deep shot down the right sideline. It'll be first-and-10 at the 41.

Iowa moves into the red zone with a 21-yard bootleg throw to Sam LaPorta, who goes down at the 17.

Michigan avoids disaster with an overthrow from the running back on a trick play. He had a wide-open receiver in the end zone. Two plays later it's third-and-5, where David Ojabo drops him for a loss.

The 33-yard field goal attempt is missed, and we've still got ourselves a tie ballgame.

Michigan is taking aim at history on Saturday night. 

Michigan (11-1) takes on Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. A victory would earn the Wolverines (11-1) their first Big Ten title since 2004, but also send them to their first College Football Playoff in program history.

Kickoff is at 8 p.m.

Michigan is No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings, following a 42-27 victory last weekend over Ohio State.
