The College Football Playoff rankings had a change at the top in its third week, but unbeaten Michigan remains at No. 3.

Georgia is the new No. 1 after a dominant 52-17 victory over Ole Miss last Saturday, while Ohio State dropped No. 2, after spending the first two weeks at No. 1. The Buckeyes are coming off a 38-3 win over Michigan State. Florida State remains at No. 4 in the latest rankings released Tuesday night.

CFP selection committee representatives had questioned Michigan’s strength of schedule after the first two rankings were released but the Wolverines are now coming of their toughest test so far this season and improved to 10-0 with a 24-15 win at Penn State. The Wolverines rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns against the then-nation’s top run defense, which had been yielding an average 60.3 rushing.

Boo Corrigan, the CFP committee chair, was asked on a conference call Tuesday night with reporters about Ohio State and Michigan and their rankings.

“Looking at Ohio State, the wins over Penn State that they now share with Michigan, Ohio State’s got the win over Notre Dame, 5-0 against teams with winning records, top-five defense, their offense put up 38 last,” Corrigan said, “and Michigan continues to come along and continues to be dominant in the games that they’ve played. As we go through it each week, we continue to look at everything and after Week 11, we ended up with Ohio State at 2 and Michigan at 3.”

The Wolverines played without head coach Jim Harbaugh on the sideline after he was suspended the final three regular-season games last Friday by the Big Ten. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti indicated Harbaugh violated the conference’s Sportsmanship Policy relating to an ongoing NCAA investigation into an alleged sign-stealing scheme.

Lawyers representing Harbaugh and the university filed for a temporary restraining order against the Big Ten and Petitti later Friday in state court in an attempt to negate the Big Ten suspension. There was no hearing and Harbaugh did not coach last Saturday. A hearing for a preliminary injunction is scheduled Friday at the Washtenaw County Courthouse.

Before the release of the CFP rankings on ESPN, show host Rece Davis said he thinks Michigan is one of the two best teams in the country.

“I think any time you don’t have your leader out there, it can have a negative impact,” Davis said. “But I still think Michigan is one of the two best teams in the country, two best teams that I’ve seen this year. I think they can still win The Game (against Ohio State even without Harbaugh). It was a really good performance (against Penn State) with Sherrone Moore, who’s a rising star in coaching, guiding them. Not optimal, but I still think they can win that game.”
