Michigan has added former Maryland linebacker Jaishawn Barham, who had been a four-star recruit from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, from the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-4, 233-pound Barham announced his commitment via social media on Wednesday, which happens to be the first day of the early signing period for high school recruits. Barham entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 3 and is Michigan’s first commitment from the portal this season.

Former Maryland linebacker Jaishawn Barham (1) is transferring to Michigan.

As a freshman in 2022, Barham had 58 tackles and four sacks and earned Freshman All-American and All-Big Ten honorable mention honors. This season with the Terps, he had 37 tackles and three tackles for loss, all sacks. His lone interception, the first of his career, came against Michigan when he picked off J.J. McCarthy.

His addition boosts Michigan at linebacker considering Michael Barrett, on Sunday named Michigan’s top linebacker during the annual team awards, has exhausted his eligibility and Junior Colson could leave for the NFL. Colson on Monday said he hasn’t made a decision about his future. Barham will join a room that includes Ernest Hausmann, who transferred to Michigan last year after one season at Nebraska.
