Michigan coach Sherrone Moore has hired Lou Esposito as defensive line coach.

Lou Esposito spent 10 years, over two stints, on Western Michigan's staff.

Esposito had joined Memphis as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach in the offseason after spending seven seasons at Western Michigan, where he was defensive coordinator and defensive line coach (2017-23).

Michigan announced the hire on Friday. Esposito replaces Greg Scruggs, who resigned on March 21, five days after an arrest for operating while intoxicated.

“Lou is a great defensive mind that has developed outstanding players and produced top units at the line of scrimmage throughout his coaching career," Moore, in his first season as head coach, said in a statement. "He will be a great asset and mentor for the young men in our program.”

Esposito also coached the Western Michigan defensive line from 2010-12. Before he joined the WMU staff, he had been the first head coach of Davenport University’s program (2014-16) and was the defensive coordinator at Ferris State University in 2013. The Bulldogs led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in total defense, rushing defense and pass efficiency defense under Esposito.

He attended Memphis, where he lettered four years on the offensive line and was a team captain in 1999 and 2000.
