Ann Arbor — Michigan defensive line coach Lou Esposito, a late addition to head coach Sherrone Moore’s staff, will make $1 million in base pay over two years.

Esposito will make a base salary of $500,000 each of the next two years, according to his contract obtained Tuesday through an open-records request by The Detroit News.

Defensive line coach Lou Esposito takes his players through drills before the start of the annual spring game at Michigan Stadium.

He signed the contract March 29, the day his hiring was officially announced. He will receive a signing bonus of $786,000 and a relocation stipend of $25,000 within his first month.

Esposito replaced Greg Scruggs, who resigned on March 21, five days after an arrest in Ann Arbor for operating while intoxicated. Esposito had joined Memphis, his alma mater, as co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach earlier this year after spending seven seasons at Western Michigan, where he was defensive coordinator and defensive line coach from 2017-23.

According to the contract, should Esposito resign before Jan. 1, 2025, he must repay the signing bonus. There’s a $500,000 buyout if he leaves Michigan before the last game of the 2024 season and $250,000 if he leaves after the conclusion of the season. There is no buyout if he leaves after the end of the 2024 season to become a head coach or defensive coordinator at a Division I program or the NFL.
