Michigan's Peoples-Jones, Runyan, Jeter 'have a chance to play' vs. Army

Ann Arbor – Michigan opened the season with several key players missing, but they could be back for Saturday’s game against Army.

Receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones was on the sideline with his right foot in a boot for the season opener against Middle Tennessee; left tackle Jon Runyan, who went through pre-game warmups, did not play; defensive lineman Donovan Jeter also was out; and Michael Dwumfour, also a defensive lineman, missed most of the game with an injury.

“All three have a chance to play this week,” Harbaugh said at his Monday news conference, referring to Peoples-Jones, Runyan and Jeter.

He said he hadn’t seen Dwumfour yet and wasn’t certain of his status.

“We’ll see,” he said.

With Runyan out, Ryan Hayes had an opportunity to get his first start at left tackle and was, according to Harbaugh, the offensive player of the game. The Wolverines had two new starters at the tackles, with Jalen Mayfield at right tackle.

“He graded out right there with Ben Bredeson and Cesar (Ruiz) and Mike Onwenu, which I thought was really impressive,” Harbaugh said. “Considering it was his first start, first game, seeing him and the effort -- he gave some really fine blocks. He was good with his hands and sets, etc. I thought Jalen was also good.”

If Runyan returns, where does that leave Hayes, who has been backing up both tackle spots? Harbaugh left open the possibility Hayes could compete for time at right tackle.

“Really impressed with Ryan; it’s a meritocracy all the way,” Harbaugh said. “Is there ability to compete at the other tackle spot? Sure. Does that open up options if he’s come this far and played this well? It bodes well for the team.”
