Jose Calderon returns to Pistons on one-year deal

At the onset of free agency on Sunday morning, the Pistons were considered to be a longshot to make many moves of significance, because they were over the salary cap and almost any larger deal would put them perilously close to the luxury-tax line of $123.7 million.

That’s not a good place for a team that finished 39-43 last season and missed the playoffs.

In the first two days of the summer signing frenzy, the Pistons are figuring out ways to tiptoe around the cap restrictions, making smaller moves to augment their roster.

The Pistons reportedly made a deal Monday to add veteran point guard Jose Calderon. Priority Sports, which represents Calderon, made the announcement on Twitter on Monday afternoon: “Congratulations to @JmCalderon on your new contract with the @DetroitPistons. Your amazing career continues!”

ESPN’s Chris Haynes reported that the Pistons’ deal with Calderon is for one year at the veteran minimum of $2.4 million. That likely spells the end for Dwight Buycks, who was on a non-guaranteed contract for next season.

Calderon, 36, averaged 4.5 points and 2.1 assists and shot 46 percent (45-of-97) on 3-pointers in 57 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season. In his 13-year NBA career, Calderon also played for the Pistons in 2012-13 and previously for eight seasons for the Toronto Raptors, where he worked under new Pistons coach Dwane Casey, before he was traded to the Pistons in January 2013. At the end of that season, Calderon signed with the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent.

Cleveland was Calderon’s seventh NBA team. He has been in the league for 13 seasons and has career averages of 9.2 points, 5.9 assists and 2.5 rebounds. He is a career 47.4-percent shooter (41.1 percent on 3-pointers).
