Lions waive safety DeJon Gomes in injury-related agreement

The Lions waived safety DeJon Gomes with an injury settlement Friday, less than a week after placing him on injured reserve.

Gomes suffered an injury on a helmet-to-helmet hit with Raiders tight end Scott Simonson in the Lions’ second exhibition game. The Lions first called it a neck injury, but coach Jim Caldwell said later it was Gomes’ shoulder.

Because Gomes was already on injured reserve, the move does not impact the active roster. The Lions didn’t announce any cuts Friday, so they still have to make 22 moves to reduce the roster from 75 players to 53 by Saturday at 4 p.m.

Gomes, who was a backup safety and special teams contributor for the Lions in 2013, declined to comment on the extent of his injury, and Caldwell would not say whether or not he needed surgery.

As part of the collective bargaining agreement, NFL teams must provide compensation when cutting injured players. With the settlement, the Lions will pay Gomes a portion of his 2014 salary for the weeks he’s expected to miss unless another team signs him. The Lions can’t re-sign him until six weeks after the agreed upon injury time frame ends.
