Orlando, Fla. — The Detroit Lions will be unveiling their new uniforms next month, before the NFL draft, according to team president Rod Wood. Beyond that, details of the updated look were intentionally sparse.

"I think everybody will be excited about it," Wood said. "I'm not going to tease it too much, but I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It was a multi-year process that (chief communications and brand officer) Brian (Facchini) and (chief operating officer) Mike Disner really led. (They) worked with Nike and the league, and I think the fans are going to be really excited about it."

Wood was asked what he liked about the uniforms, but wasn't fooled by the question, only suggesting the changes to the current look won't be significant.

14. Detroit Lions: The Honolulu Blue and Silver isn’t an NFL favorite, but a unique color scheme that works well together. Although the home jerseys are crisp, the road whites are bland and the lion logo needs another overhaul. The Lions get bonus points for the rarely-used throwbacks, which are one of the league’s best.

"That's a way to get me to say something," Wood said. "They're not purple. They're not yellow and gold. They're honoring our traditional color with a little updating and twist. And it gives us a lot more options, too. We're going to introduce a couple different pant options that can go with jerseys, so it will give us different options to wear during the season."

Wood was also asked if the William Clay Ford shoulder patch would continue to be part of the uniform.

"We're going to treat that in a little different way," he said. "I'm not going to tease exactly how it is. It's going to be honored, but not in the same way it was on the current uniforms."

Wood said a number of the team's players have seen the new uniforms, taking part in a photoshoot earlier in the month.

"I think they were all very, very excited about them," Wood said. "We've got a few players who really care about uniforms, and those that do were very happy with what they saw."

This will be the first update to Detroit's uniforms since they unveiled their current look in 2017. That included a gray "Color Rush" alternate. In that update, they removed black from their color scheme and modernized the wording and number fonts.

The Lions released an alternate, blue helmet last offseason. It's only eligible to be paired with the team's alternate jersey, which was the all-gray setup last year.
