Lions angling for two sets of joint practices in 2024, including on the road with Giants

Allen Park — After hosting a set of joint practices between the teams last year, the Detroit Lions are looking to get paired with the New York Giants again this preseason, only taking the show on the road this go-around.

"Tentatively, right now, I’ve been talking to (Giants coach Brian) Daboll," Lions coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday morning at the league meetings. "So I think there’s a chance we could go to New York."

NFL teams are allowed to request one preseason opponent and the Lions have filed to work with the Giants, preferably for the opener.

"I don’t know if it’s going to get done or not, but we’ve been talking about it just because we wanted to reciprocate the fact they came to us, we wanted to give (the opportunity to host) to them."

Campbell is also hopeful to work out a second set of joint practices the second week of the preseason, regardless of whether that game is home or away. That's how things worked last year, when the league scheduled a matchup against Jacksonville in Detroit. Campbell picked up the phone and called coach Doug Pederson, who was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity to get in some extra work for his team.

"It'll be that again," Campbell said. "Whoever we match up with in Week 2, I would love to do two weeks (of joint practices) again, like we did last year. It’ll be predicated on who that is and whether we go to them or they come to us. But yeah, I’m all for it."
