Red Wings sign forwards Tyler Bertuzzi, Martin Frk to new deals

Detroit — The Red Wings stayed busy Monday — after an eventful weekend at the NHL Entry Draft — agreeing to new contracts with restricted free-agent forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Martin Frk.

Bertuzzi signed a two-year contract worth $2.8 million, while Frk's is one year for $1.05 million.

Bertuzzi, 23, earned his first extended opportunty in the NHL last season and took advange of it, scoring seven goals with 17 assists (24 points) in 48 games, with a minus-7 plus-minus rating.

Bertuzzi was called up from Grand Rapids for good in late December, after scoring 14 points (seven goals) in 16 games with the Griffins.

Playing on a line with Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist, Bertuzzi thrived using his grit and desire of going to the net.

Frk, 24, was believed to be headed toward unrestricted free agency, but the Wings decided to retain his rights.

In 68 games, Frk had 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points, and a minus-14 rating. Five of the 11 goals came on the power play, where’s Frk powerful shot has been the calling card in his career.

But Frk was unable to earn much playing time beyond the fourth line, on which he isn’t ideally suited.

With the addition of draft pick Filip Zadina on Friday, another wing, the Wings have a glut of forwards and likely will make a trade before training camp.

Frk, Gustav Nyquist (one year from unrestricted free agency), and Luke Glendening are expected to be candidates to be dealt.
