Go Green at the Detroit Zoo this spring
Celebrate and support sustainability at two events sponsored by the Detroit Zoo. Greenfest, offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 12-13, includes live music, delicious food, an eco-friendly marketplace and hands-on activities as well as the animals who call the zoo home. Included with zoo admission, the events “offer a unique opportunity to engage with green initiatives, reduce your environmental footprint and take action toward a more sustainable future,” according to a press release. Also scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon those days is E-Recycling at Greenfest, providing members with the chance to declutter in a responsible manner and drop off old, unwanted devices for safe, eco-friendly recycling. Recycled items help reduce landfill waste, protect animal habitats by cutting down on the need for new metal mining and safeguard the environment for future generations. Donators earn free tickets for future zoo admission based on the size of donation. “No matter how much you know about sustainability, this is a great weekend to visit the zoo and see how you can go green and ignite positive change for animals and nature,” says Marissa Ratzenberger, events supervisor for the Detroit Zoological Society. Learn about pollinator-friendly gardens
Recent research has shown that bees and other pollinators are at high risk of extinction, threatening our food chain and natural world as we know it. Home gardeners are encouraged to help out by planting their own support system at home — even small plots are helpful. Learn how to do just that when John Blair speaks with the St. Clair Shores Yardeners on April 14 about pollinator gardening, blending native and traditional plants and how to create a pollinator and butterfly garden. A native plant and prairie restoration enthusiast, Blair will share design elements needed to create your own butterfly garden, including plant selection, use of native plants, site preparation and selection and more. Blair, retired from automotive engineering, turned 9 acres near Brooklyn, Michigan, into a thriving native prairie and butterfly garden. The presentation will be held at the St. Clair Shores City Hall, 27600 Jefferson Ave., at 7 p.m. Visit scsmi.net/829/Charities-Organizations.

Calico Wallpaper introduces Primavera
Calico Wallpaper, a bespoke company based in Brooklyn, recently launched their latest collection, Primavera. Designed in-house by creative director and co-founder Rachel Cope, Primavera “is a celebration of new life in spring,” according a press release. The collection is inspired by Sandro Botticelli's masterpiece of the same name, bringing the spirit of romance found in the painting into living spaces. A non-repeating mural based on the groundcover of the painting, it includes leaves, blossoms, petals, stems and buds in a variety of color options. “When viewing Botticelli’s Primavera, I am captivated by the flowers and foliage, so beautifully detailed to evoke symbolism of renewal and fertility,” Cope explains. “This collection is my own interpretation of this setting; bringing a romantic celebration of life into living spaces.” Visit calicowallpaper.com
